Hamburger Energienetze has awarded NKT three onshore high-voltage AC cable projects as part of expanding and modernising Hamburg’s electricity distribution network.

The projects include more than 50 km of 110 kV cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) power cables and form part of the distribution system operator’s ‘Grid of the Future’ programme.

The programme is intended to prepare the city’s network for increasing electricity demand from electric vehicles, heat pumps and new industrial loads, alongside the integration of renewable energy.

NKT will act as general contractor, responsible for planning, cable production, installation, testing, and documentation through to commissioning.

NKT will manufacture the cable systems at its facilities in Cologne, Germany, and Velké Meziříčí, Czech Republic.

The announcement does not disclose the contract value or project completion dates.
