As a longstanding member of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) Market Strategy Board (MSB), Dr Maurizio Bragagni OBE, CEO of Tratos Ltd, made the necessary arrangements for the General Meeting to take place in London on the 18th & 19th of April 2023.
The IEC is an international standards organisation headquartered in Geneva, Switzerland, that prepares and publishes international standards for all electrical, electronic and related technologies. The IEC offers its members a neutral, independent international forum where often globally renowned experts from industry, government, academia and user groups can sit together and find consensus on solutions to broad technical challenges.
During two intensive days of the meeting, the Chair of the MSB and IEC Vice President, Dr Kazuhiko Tsutumi, along with 14 IEC & MSB members, representing various leading electrotechnical industries all over the world engaged in a frank exchange of views with experts from industry and academia.
In the frame of this meeting, Tratos hosted a round table on “Using innovation and standardisation toward the decarbonisation of the transport sector”.
The round table benefited from a wide spectrum of participants, representing the UK government’s Department for Business and Trade, BCA, RIA, PEMA, Cavotech and other key players in the cable, rail port, manufacturing, and utility sectors. This session facilitated a frank exchange of views and ideas, as well as highlighting the role of standards and IEC as enablers of free international trade, providing an understanding of what the business community wants from the regulators in addressing challenges and meeting the opportunities in achieving sustainable development and protecting the environment.
Mr John Pearce, CEO of Made in Britain, made a presentation on the key metrics in addressing the environmental, social and economic challenges we face. The systemic implications of digitalising the physical reality were elaborated by Prof Gianvito Lanzolla, Professor of Strategy, Bayes Business School, Faculty of Management.
Tratos offered participants a 3D virtual tour of its manufacturing site in the UK and its products and an overview of what the company is doing to achieve sustainable development and net zero emissions targets.
MSB members had the opportunity to hear from Mr Kevin Hollinrake MP – Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Business and Trade, on the important role of standardisation, which originates in the UK, and what the UK government is doing in terms of achieving net zero emissions.
The IEC MSB meeting had a twofold positive outcome. First, it contributed to enhancing the MSB members’ understanding of various emerging industry needs for standardisation. Second, it contributed to putting the UK at the centre of discussions for the future work of the IEC. Overall, the meeting achieved its objectives and provided an enhanced panorama of future work of the IEC in boosting cooperation among key players in the standardisation process for achieving net zero emissions targets.
