The planning approval process for the Salzgitter industrial pipeline has begun. On December 16, 2022, the responsible authority, the Lower Saxony state authority for road construction and traffic, opened the approval process. The important power grid expansion project is thus taking a big step towards implementation. As early as the end of 2025, the Salzgitter industrial line is to supply the Salzgitter AG plants and other industrial companies based in the region with renewable energies and contribute to making the production processes of the local economy more climate-friendly and sustainable. This line also increases grid stability and security of supply in the region for private households.
TenneT COO Tim Meyerjürgens says: “The Salzgitter industrial pipeline is a key driver for the transformation of Salzgitter as an industrial and business location and for the security of supply in the region. The fact that we are now on the home straight for the approval process after only around two years since the project was initiated shows what is possible when everyone involved pulls together. This is a success that encourages further grid expansion and the energy transition in Lower Saxony and throughout Germany. Now we have to get the Salzgitter industrial management to implement it quickly so that the future and transformation projects of the local companies can start on time.”
Salzgitter AG, one of the largest employers in the region, also welcomes the project milestone. Ulrich Grethe, CEO of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH, says: “For us, the timely completion of the Salzgitter industrial pipeline is a key building block for the transformation of steel production. We will convert the company to low-CO2 steel production with SALCOS®. In this way, we are securing the future of the Salzgitter site with its jobs. For this transformation, we need large amounts of electricity, which the Salzgitter industrial line will provide us with in the future. We have a tight schedule for SALCOS® and are very pleased that the planning approval procedure will be opened before the end of this year.”
After the opening of the planning approval procedure, public and official participation will start at the beginning of 2023 with the display of the planning documents. TenneT already used the local knowledge of the public when preparing the application documents and involved politicians, residents and local associations early on in the planning process. From a large number of discussions with the public, information and insights have been incorporated into the investigation of different route variants and the final, site-specific planning. All in all, the planning could be decisively improved. TenneT was able to meet around a third of the expressed mast displacement requests and save two originally planned masts during detailed planning.
At the beginning of the planning approval process, procedural sovereignty lies with the approval authority. TenneT will continue the dialogue with the public during the ongoing approval process and provide transparent information.
Salzgitter is one of the most important and largest industrial locations in Lower Saxony and all of Germany. The stability of the networks is of outstanding importance for domestic industry and private end users. The existing power grid in the region is not designed for the coming energy-intensive transformations during the energy transition and must be replaced by high-performance lines.
The industrial line will be integrated into a higher-level network to transport the required large amounts of electricity to Salzgitter and the neighbouring regions of Lower Saxony. As a connection between the regional and national network expansion, it ensures that industry, business and private households in the Salzgitter and Peine area can continue to be guaranteed a stable power supply.
