As part of National Grid’s wider £40 billion investment programme to upgrade the UK’s energy infrastructure, the company is announcing £624 million of contracts across 78 companies in England and Wales, giving businesses of all sizes a key role in modernising the country’s strategic electricity network.
Over the next five years, National Grid and these suppliers will work together to support critical electricity network maintenance and enhancements across England and Wales – a key enabler for delivering thousands of new homes, factories and data centres the UK Government wants built this decade.
The benefits of these contracts extend beyond infrastructure, creating opportunities for local businesses, jobs and communities.
Every project is designed to leave a lasting legacy in the communities it serves. On one major converter station project, a supplier has identified early opportunities that could support around 270 local jobs, provide more than 3,000 apprenticeship weeks and benefit around 30 local SMEs and community organisations, with more than half of project spending expected to remain within the local area.
Roger Smith Skilled Services, a family business established in 1981 and employing three people, is one of the companies expected to benefit through work across West Cornwall, Bodmin, Plymouth and Devon.
The contracts form part of National Grid’s £40 billion investment programme to upgrade the UK’s energy infrastructure over the next five years, helping to deliver major transmission projects and network improvements across England and Wales.
Alongside its investment in energy infrastructure, National Grid is also supporting local communities through its Community Grant Programme and Community Matters Fund, and is looking for ways to support local initiatives that make a difference.
