LS Marine Solution has begun full-scale construction of its next-generation submarine cable-laying vessel.
The ship, Korea’s largest dedicated submarine cable-laying vessel, is optimised to lay long-distance, large-scale submarine cables, including extra-high-voltage direct-current (HVDC) cables, and to support offshore wind power grids.
The investment plan was announced in May of last year, with design and manufacturing preparations lasting until last month. A steel-cutting ceremony was held at Tersan Shipyard in Türkiye to mark the start of construction, and delivery is scheduled for the first half of 2028.
With a cable loading capacity of 13,000 tons, the vessel can construct long-distance sections at once, minimising departures and cable connections and, in turn, boosting construction efficiency and stability. With this new vessel, the company aims to pursue large-scale submarine power grid projects, including the government-promoted West Coast HVDC Energy Highway.
In addition to the existing GL2030, LS Marine Solution will now have two dedicated cable-laying vessels capable of executing the West Coast HVDC project. The new ship will further strengthen the company’s ability to respond to mega-sized national power grid projects and large-scale overseas projects.
LS GreenLink, the US submarine cable production subsidiary of LS Cable & System, is also set to begin commercial production in 2028. With this, LS Marine Solution will be able to ramp up its expansion into the US and European markets through turnkey projects linking local production and submarine construction.
