Iberdrola has completed a €100 million programme to rebuild and strengthen electricity infrastructure damaged by the 2024 floods in Spain’s Valencia region.
The work covered around 20 substations, 940 transformer stations, and approximately 460 electricity pylons, along with the installation of more than 108,000 smart meters.
Delivered under the company’s Plan il·lumina programme, the upgrades involved more than 1,000 professionals. Iberdrola said the investment incorporates digital technologies and artificial intelligence to improve network resilience.
The completed programme comes ahead of a wider investment push, with the company planning to allocate nearly €2 billion to electricity networks in the Valencia region by 2031, in addition to the flood recovery spending.
For the electricity infrastructure sector, the announcement highlights two pressures: strengthening networks against extreme weather and preparing for rising electricity demand from industry, digitalisation, and electric transport.
Iberdrola presented the results on 15 September at its facilities in Torrent, which supported both the emergency response and subsequent reconstruction work.
