Tratos prioritise innovation and is committed to improving its “green credentials.” It presently delivers distinctive cables to a prominent integrated operator in Italy that provides energy worldwide with a lower CO2 impact, thanks to the Borealis Bornewables™ solution.

In 2021, Tratos was invited to join a tender where a higher technical score was awarded to cable solutions built with sustainable materials and/or through a more energy-efficient process. Based on this requirement, Tratos’ R&D team suggested that sustainable polyolefin sheathing compounds of vegetable origin for medium voltage (MV) and low voltage (LV) cables would be a viable solution.

This idea was further developed with Borealis, and thanks to their partnership, the first use of Bornewables™ in the energy industry was made possible. Bornewables is Borealis’ portfolio of polyolefin products manufactured with renewable feedstocks. These premium polyolefins offer the same material performance as virgin polyolefins but with a reduced CO2 footprint according to the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification Plus (ISCC PLUS) classification. With this solution, Tratos reduced CO2 emissions by 320 kg/km for a 185 mm2 MV cable compared to traditional solutions based on fossil feedstock.
