Prysmian Group has supplied more than 250 km of Medium Voltage cables, from its Vilanova i la Geltrú  energy cable manufacturing facilities, for the new line of the Barcelona Metro network. Line 9 is the longest automatic driverless train metro line in Europe, ahead of line 3 Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya of the Moscow metro (44.3 km), line 12 of Metro de Madrid (41 km) and the Northern Line of the London Underground. The total system is 47.8 km long, of which 43.71 km underground and 4.09 km on viaducts, and is expected to have 120 million passengers a year, connecting Barcelona Airport to the city centre.

The Group has supplied MV XLPE 30kV cables from its Afumex aluminum cable range, as well as Network Components solutions, for a total contract value of about €3 million. “As an automatic and smart metro line – says Mauricio Sobero, T&I Sales Manager from Prysmian Spain –, quality and high technical performances were required of all materials involved. Engineers and technicians from the R&D and Industrial areas worked together to satisfy specific customer demands and succeeded in getting the right cable for UTE ENERGIA* Linea 9, confirming the customer’s confidence in Prysmian as the best-in-class Cable Solutions supplier.”

This type of cable is increasingly in demand by public authorities and organisations for its fire-resistant properties and ability to protect people and equipment from toxic and corrosive gas and in all poorly ventilated areas. Afumex cables continue to operate in the event of fire and guarantee their duration of survival in working condition.
